Insurance 101: what every Singaporean needs

MediShield Life, Integrated Shield Plans, life insurance, and income protection explained in plain English.

Insurance in Singapore ranges from genuinely essential to actively unnecessary depending on your life stage. Here is how to tell the difference.

1. What you already have automatically

Every Singapore Citizen and PR is automatically covered by MediShield Life β€” a basic national health insurance scheme that helps pay for large hospital bills and selected costly outpatient treatments at public hospital rates.

πŸ’‘ It is not full coverage

MediShield Life is designed to cover large, unexpected bills at public ward rates β€” it has deductibles, co-insurance, and caps. It does not cover private hospital rates.

2. Integrated Shield Plans (IPs)

An Integrated Shield Plan is private insurance that sits on top of MediShield Life, typically covering private hospital wards or higher-tier public wards, with lower co-payments. These are purchased from private insurers and paid using a mix of MediSave (up to caps) and cash.

⚠ Premium escalation

IP premiums are low in your 20s but escalate rapidly as you age. Only buy a ward class (private vs public A/B1) you can afford to sustain long-term.

3. Life insurance vs income protection

These two are often confused but solve completely different problems:

ProductPays out when...Who needs it most
Term Life InsuranceYou pass away or suffer total permanent disabilityAnyone with dependents relying on their income
Disability Income / Income ProtectionYou cannot work due to illness/injury (while alive)Anyone who relies on their own income to pay monthly bills

4. What to prioritize, in order

A common mistake is buying substantial life insurance early while leaving income protection completely unaddressed. Here is a sensible priority list:

  • MediShield Life β€” Already automatic from birth.
  • Emergency Fund β€” Not insurance, but your first buffer against minor crises.
  • Integrated Shield Plan (IP) + Rider β€” For comprehensive medical hospitalisation coverage.
  • Disability Income / Income Protection β€” To protect your ability to earn.
  • Term Life Insurance β€” Only once you have dependents (spouse, children, parents).

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need an Integrated Shield Plan in my 20s?
Not strictly essential, but premiums are lowest and health is best early on β€” pre-existing conditions developed later can lead to exclusions.
Q: What is term life insurance vs whole life?
Term insurance covers you for a fixed period at a lower premium with no cash value. Whole life covers you for life and builds cash value, but at a significantly higher premium.
Q: Is critical illness coverage the same as hospitalisation?
No β€” critical illness plans pay a lump sum upon diagnosis of a covered condition, which you can use for anything (replaces income during recovery), whereas hospitalisation plans pay the actual hospital bill.
